San Diego Destination Shoot
Ever since I’ve started photographing high school Seniors, I have dreamed of doing a destination shoot. It’s something that has been on the raise the last couple of years. For the past three years, I kept telling myself that I was going to offer a destination shoot. And every year, I would let fear creep in and I would talk myself out of it.
In June of this year, I was able to travel to San Diego with my husband for a conference. We were only there for four days, but I feel in love with the city. As I sat in the airport headed home, I decided I wanted to come back and do a destination shoot. I posted a message in the group message with my Class of 2018 Spokesmodel team. Although there was a high amount of interest, due to it being football season, there were four girls who were able to go on the trip.
We traveled to San Diego November 9th through the 12th. I picked those days because that Monday was a holiday, and the girls would only miss one day of school. We rented a townhouse in Imperial Beach, which was a 5 minute walk to the beach.
Prior to leaving, I had to decide on what types of shoots I wanted to do with the girls. My goal was to make this something totally different for them, especially because three of the girls had never been to California before. I decided to do a desert and beach shoot, because we don’t have desert scenery in Texas. I picked Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in Borrego Springs as the location for the desert shoot. It did not disappoint, and we even stopped along the way to get pictures. Due to the fires in northern California, there was a haze amongst the backdrop of the mountains, it provided a natural filter. As for the beach session, we walked down to Imperial Beach.
The girls had a great time on this trip. They even told their parents that they didn’t want to come back home. I am happy that I did this, that I didn’t let fear take over me once again. I’m currently already working on a destination trip for Class of 2019. I would love any recommendations!!
